Tom and Mae Conard

          Tom and Mae Conard

Tom Conard chose the Frankfort Community Public Library to receive gifts of cherry and walnut lumber to memorialize his wife, Mae.  Mr. Conard provided a 16-foot Pennsylvania cherry log to make paneling for the Elizabeth OíRear Skanta Theatre.  He selected walnut logs and had them cut in order to make the benches in the Anna and Harlan Hubbard Art Gallery and paneling in the first and second floor lobbies. Tom Conard founded, and was president of Hoosier Timber, and Mae was Vice President. They provided veneer logs for David R. Webb Co. of Edinburgh, Indiana. The Conards eventually sold Hoosier Timber to David R. Webb Co., and Tom continued to serve as president. Hoosier Timber and David R. Webb Company were major donors toward the finished panels in the theatre.

Dwain Miller and Steve Rothenberger provided the trucks to haul the lumber to Columbia City to be kiln dried; Indianapolis to be sawn; Knox to be planed; and Valparaiso to be turned into the finished product by Konrad Juestel.  Furniture on the first and second floor of the Herrick Wing was made from Tomís lumber, including 11 tables, 70 chairs, 42 bookstack end panels, 12-foot reference desk, 60-foot circulation desk, 762 square feet of hand-planed walnut paneling and 784 square feet of cherry paneling.
